Secularism its meaning and models

Secularism is the agenda of European Modernity.

Rational values are present in school,political system,economic system therefore secularism is not possible without modernity.

Secularism is a face of modernity and has many facets

Secularism can be attained in three different ways

• Assimilative secularism 
• Ameliorative Secularism
• Expressive Secularism                

Assimilative

 A uniform culture is developed by borrowing ideas from different cultures(melting point culture) which is acceptable to all as they find their values,ideas in it.

According toBryn Wilson American secularism is Assimilative in nature.

Ameliorative 

It declares state as culturo-religious and says that culture guarantees equality,democratic rights, along with integration people,Thus for outsiders it is theocratic and for insiders it is secular state .

E.g Israel

Expressive

In India people belonging to different religions and culture are living together for centuries.
As per our constitution no religion dominated over the other religion.

Three different views on secularism

Communist- By alienating religion you may become secular.

Israel-By following single religion you can become secular.

Indian-By staying multi-religious you are secular.

“Our constitution lays down that we are a secular state, but it must be admitted that it is not wholly reflected in our mass living and thinking.The declaration of India as a secular state was only a step in the process of secularization,”-Jawaharlal Nehru.

Secularism is not just a form of practice but also is form of value.

Religion talks about divine interaction in everyday life while secularism talks about human interaction in everyday life of man.

Secularism as a value gives confidence to man and helps him to know about his own capabilities.

Religion is neurotic experience e.g When you stands in front of god you forget that you are a doctor,Engineer.

Secularism is rational experience.
